High Speed Internet

This post completes my previous post on the comparison between internet costs in Russia and Malaysia (Bahasa Malaysia).

Since the announcement about the implementation of High Speed Broadband (HSBB) rumors are spreading around that the alleged 100 (or was it 10?) Mbps speed will cost around RM500 per month!! Are you kidding me? No home user would be able to afford that (or would be stupid enough to pay for that), and if they do then probably they have a couple of Ferrari and Porsche in their garage.

The price will be lowered. 1Mbps would be around RM40-60, 4Mbps around RM100-120 and the alleged 10Mbps would be RM150-250. Still very expansive if you’re going to compare it with what is offered in Russia.

[table id=2/]

Why Russia? Based on the corruptiness/mismanagement I can say we are around that level, but still we are better than them. I mean you can’t compare us with Singapore, Singapore is freakin’ small thus making it easier for them to work out the high speed network.

When the price for Streamyx packages are lowered, those b**tards Digi, Maxis & Celcom will whine a lot. They will say the government is not supporting their businesses. Right now they are reaping billions of profit with their crappy not-so-unlimited packages.

Nuffnangers: please nang this post if you like it. Thanks!

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you when it comes to internet connectivity. It’d be great if people would comment more in English so that I can also understand it when following this issue :)

      ini septz ka?

haha. rindu nak suroh ko download banyak2. kat mai ni ade internet boleh harap la sket skarang. 700 rub sebulan 1mbps unlimited. oklah tu. banyak la jugak dapat download.

problem malaysia ni sebab tm monopoly submarine cable landing rights kat malaysia. so kalau ade company luar nak masuk pun kena thru tm gak. tu sebab sampai skarang xdapat lagi internet laju2 ni

Mula2 kena clear pasal international bandwidth dan local bandwidth. Local bandwidth adalah traffic yang tidak perlu keluar Malaysia, most probably those yang interconnected via MyIx. While international bandwidth memerlukan physical submarine cable to interconnect outside Malaysia.

So, untuk local bandwidth, yes… ISP boleh lower the price. Jadi, nak surf local hosted site boleh laju lah.

But, to go international memang susah nak murah. Just call any international bandwidth provider (HGC, PCCW, Jaring, or NTT) what their 1Mbps price? around RM1000.00 before government tax, So, it is impossible for ISP yang buat retails (TM. Maxis, DiGi, Celcom) to lower their price.

Just imagine international bandwidth as raw material, kalau raw material pun mahal, memang tak boleh la nak jual murah kepada pengguna. Now, most telcos make money still from their GSM business, not 3G…yet.

    Solution:
    1. Perbanyakkan local content’s site. Forget Facebook, introduce 1Mybook, lupakan Youtube…etc.

    2. Built another international submarine fiber optic cable landing station.

    3. ‘Open’ Singapore causeway… so, we can buy cheap bandwidth from Singaporean.

We are going to have HSBB but I wonder it will be early next year (prays).

Too bad we can’t have 100mbps such as in Hong Kong where they plan to have it at USD 13.

Most ISPs use TM’s backbone so TM is the one who is in control in pricing.

Strange to see that we are the earliest to have broadband but not improved much in years

In my opinion this is mainly because of our housing community. In Singapore/Hong Kong/japan, people live in apartments/condos, so laying high speed cables is easy. You plug in one building with high speed cable then hundreds of people could benefit from it. In Malaysia, they need to plug in several for a certain housing area.

Hah. I don’t know. Just some theory I made up, but I guess it made sense.

      Anyways thanks for stopping by
